Life Change

For as long as I can remember, Mom has had hearing loss. I was not kind during my childhood years, getting frustrated having to repeat myself, being a brat as I look back on my behavior.

Mom has worn hearing aids for years and her and Dad both had a “good ear” and would sit in appropriate chairs to have the best chance at hearing each other.

Closed Caption is such a gift!

The summer of 2022 brought news from Moms audiologist that her hearing aids were no longer working for her and there was nothing more he could do. He recommended seeing a specialist in Gainesville in regards to a cochlear implant.

My brain went here:

“Are you joking? She’s 87 years old. No Dr. Is going to do surgery on someone of her age.”

I made the call anyways. Knowing that it would be a disappointment and Mom would most likely live out the rest of her days struggling to hear anything at all.

When I called the Dr’s office, they proceeded to tell me that Dr Antonelli had a wait list for new patients but it was quite lengthy.

Ok.. I thought a few weeks.

It was a 5 month wait.

“Would you like to see one of Dr. Antonellis associates?” I was asked.

No thank you. I know nothing about ears and hearing, and if this guy is the best. I want her to see the best.

The scheduler for Dr. Antonelli said to me “he’s really worth the wait.”

While it was hard telling Mom she wouldn’t get to see the Dr for 5 months, she agreed it was the best decision.

February 2023 finally came and we drove to Gainesville to see Dr Antonelli.

I was SO VERY WRONG!!!

Not only did Mom qualify for a cochlear implant, Dr. Antonelli said she was the perfect candidate.

And he was absolutely worth the wait. He was kind and considerate. He spoke gently to us both knowing that this procedure was so unfamiliar.

Mom has to have extensive hearing tests to verify her hearing was bad enough for insurance to pay. She passed with flying colors.

Today is the day.

I sit in the waiting room waiting as the board above me shows progress.

This device could be life changing for Mom. She has suffered for long enough and today is her day.

It was worth the wait.

If you have a moment today, prayers for my sweet Mom are appreciated.
