Lots of friends and family

Today was filled with friends.

Kelli surprised us with a visit today. She was my very VERY best friend all the way through elementary school and middle school. She practically lived at our house. She went on vacations with us. We were inseparable until high school came around and then stupid boys got in the way. Now 33 years later and much life passed, we meet again.

Kelli and her 2 beautiful daughters stopped off at the old house today. Her and her husband live in California and she has been following my blog. Her father and her brother live in Dunnellon and she was in town visiting.

Luckily enough, she messaged me yesterday and asked if she could stop by. Um, YES!!!!! I decided to let it be a surprise to Mom and Dad. Kelli was like a daughter to them. I think she might have even called them Mom and Dad a few times.

Kelli

Lucky for me, I am a facebook stalker and found some pictures of Kelli’s daughters Megan and Tara. I am sure they appreciate me stealing pictures from FB for the blog. They are adorable and I am so grateful I was able to meet them.

Megan and Tara

Kelli, since I know you read the blog, let’s not make it 33 more years until we meet again. Thank you for thinking of us and wanting to come see the old house. It was a better day with you in it.

Then there’s these two……..Kate on the left and Charity on the right. Then there’s me in the middle.

kate and charity

They love us. They are family.

Charity texts me yesterday and says “What are you doing for dinner tomorrow night?”

Me thinking to myself “Work all day, sweat like a pig, hope to make it home and fall into bed, maybe popcorn for dinner?” But I really say “nothing, whatcha got in mind?”

Charity says “I was thinking about bringing you dinner.”

What????? That is like my #1 love language. Feed me.

So I tell Mom this morning, don’t worry about dinner, Charity is bringing us something to eat at 4:00. YEAH!!!!!

Work all day. Sweat like a pig. 4:00 comes and here they come. Kate and Charity and a car full of food. OH MY WORD. They brought a table, a tablecloth, shepherds pie, salad, homemade bread and dessert. It was so incredibly good and coming home with a full belly and not having to pop the popcorn was such a gift.

You know what the best part was?

Sitting with the girls, eating together and knowing that they love us like family. I don’t always tell people how much they mean to me but I hope that these two read this loud and clear. The Lockes and the Kern’s love us some Kate and Charity!!!

Love,

the girl ready for her pj’s on a Saturday night.

The Climb

The stairs are going in tonight. THE STAIRS ARE GOING IN TONIGHT!!!

Here is a lovely shot of the “before” stairs.

IMG_0386

The stairs were immediately inside the front doors. They were steep and look closely at the top. Weird sideways 1/2 step. Death Trap people.

IMG_1401

And our current stairs.

Not fun.

Not a fan.

rickety wobbly ridiculous ladder

Life is fun.

Now the stairs were supposed to go in last Saturday and again this Tuesday, so you praying people, start praying. Tonight is supposed to be the night

Love,

the girl that has been married for 31 years and still misses her guy when he’s gone.

The middle of the night

well hey middle of the nighters! Why do we wake in the middle of the night? Are we not supposed to be sleeping? It’s Sunday for goodness sake, my busiest  and most important day of the week. You see my day job is Admin Assistant at Church of Hope here in Ocala Florida. If you are from around here and don’t have a church home, stop by! We prepare all week for Sunday and here I lay on the couch after tossing and turning already for hours. What the heck.

Am I worried? Last weeks teaching was on worry. I don’t think I’m worried but just in case I prayed already (while tossing and turning) that if there is worry, please replace it with trust and faith because I know my God has got it. Yep He’s totally got it.

image

Today is Mothers Day. Not my favorite holiday. I don’t like days that expect people to do things they wouldn’t normally already do. My mom knows I love her, I try to show her more than just in Mothers Day. My kids love me everyday, I already know that. I don’t need a special day, although a nap might be a nice gift.

image

Our Pastors wife is speaking today and I am excited. I’ve also already prayed for her. I can sing in front of who cares how many, but talk, no thank you. I can’t wait to hear what she has to say.

Have you ever had a picture in your head of what something is going to look like? Ok well maybe that’s just me. I can see rooms designed, I can see an outfit using clothes in my closet. They are just there spinning around in my head. Obviously now I know why I don’t sleep. The rooms at the old house I have been dreaming about are finally coming true. The bathroom tile went down yesterday. I have dreamed about that tile for months and months. I turned the corner showing some friends around yesterday not knowing that when I stepped into our bedroom, the tile would be almost completed. I didn’t know whether to cry and dance around like a fool. I did neither but that picture in my head? The picture of the tile looking so beautiful? It was there and I can’t wait to show you.

I’m going  to go now. I hope you middle of the nighters get some rest and even though Mothers Day isn’t my favorite, I hope all you Moms and want to be Moms have a super fantastic day because the best gift I ever revived was little and now big people calling me Mom.

love,

the sleepy girl at church tomorrow looking cute in the outfit she saw spinning in her head

The miracle wedding

My cousin Jamie is more like the sister I didn’t have. We don’t live near one another, we only get to see each other once or twice a year but that doesn’t matter.

She got married last weekend. All that is so great but without the miracle, there wouldn’t have been a happily ever after.

Marty is her guy. Her is super sweet and caring. He loves her. It’s obvious. This was the night before the wedding.

IMG_1422

Jamie was really sick. She was so sick that we prayed that she would live. She had to have 60% of her pancreas removed. She has had tumors, too many to count.  She still has to have scans to check on things but she is a walking and talking miracle. We prayed, He listened.

Here is a picture of the boat they made us ride on. They could have at least sprung for something a little bigger

IMG_1425

We all love shoes. Her bride shoes were gorgeous.

IMG_1428

It was just a little windy. How come he looks so cute and not blown at all? Then there is me. Look at the goose neck waddle. Whatever.

IMG_1432

Steve and I sat over top of the parents. Here are mine. 62 years of wedded bliss and  going strong. Dad says he should get an award for being married to the same woman for so long.

IMG_1434

This is Jamie’s Mom and Dad. Real names….Dorothy and James. However us family call them Toots and Harhoooooooooooo. I don’t know how many years they have been married but I know it’s a lot. If combined years of marriage from those in attendance means anything, they should be good to go.

IMG_1437

Married on the front of a huge yacht…not to shabby.

IMG_1439

Buford in the coral shirt praying over Marty and Jamie is my other cousin/sister Debbie’s husband. Marty asked Buford a few weeks ago, “How do I get what you have?” Buford then led Marty to Jesus. What a blessing you are Buford and Debbie, we love you.

IMG_1442

So happy.

Love,

the sister/cousin loving girl.

the story of the doors

When we started demolition, we wanted to try and save everything that we could possibly reuse. This was before there was a plan, before walls changed and stairs moved. Before the attic was actually a place to go.

The doors were removed carefully. They were so gross. They were dirty and stinky. Some were damaged even before we started taking them off. However we kept every one that was even remotely useable.

We have come to the time to start gathering up the old and ugly and see what we can actually use.

Steve got his tape measure and I got paper and off we went. To the basement……… yes we have a basement in Florida which is rare. Currently it’s a black hole of nastiness. But it has also been a very valued place to store things that we had no idea where to put. Pull the baseboard off….where does it go? The basement. Remove the doors….where does it go? The basement.

This is a picture of the back of the house.

The deck to the left is off the big house. The deck to the right is Mom and Dad’s. See the little door with a roof over it in between the two decks? Yep you guessed it, the basement.

IMG_1359

The only consistency in the doors are they are 4 paneled and they are all dirty. They bring back not so fond memories of what the house used to smell like.

IMG_1468IMG_1469

They all however have different knobs. Some all ceramic, some are metal, some are black and some are white. Jesus loves the little children of the world.

IMG_1474

IMG_1473

As we are pulling the doors out the basement, Steve is measuring and I am writing it on a piece of tape and placing it on each door.

We then head into the house and measure each door frame so we can match a door with an opening.

If you have not read the story about how we got the house and who used to live there, you can read it here The Cinderella Project – Part 1 and here The Cinderella Project – Part 2 and here Cinderella Project – Part III. Each room/apartment had a name. It was the only way to keep track of them.

There was pool table ladies apartment.

There was Christmas Tree guys apartment

There was naked girls room

There was the druggies apartment and of course mean ladies apartment.

Throughout the whole process we have called each room by their names.

Yesterday we are placing the tape on the doors and Steve said “I can’t wait until we can call the rooms different names.” I responded “Yes we can do that however naked girls room will always be naked girls room.”

IMG_1471IMG_1470

Steve isn’t excited about a future grand baby at all. He lovingly named one of the rooms “The nursery.”

IMG_1472

Love,

the girl who is excited to decorate a nursery.

We have drywall

I know it’s been a while since I posted. So much happening but so little time to write.

I was able to get a few pictures of the new drywall. It makes the house look so different. Walls people!!!

This is looking in from the front door. See the ladder? That is our current stairs to the second floor.

IMG_1401

Also looking in the front door to the right. The front room will be the dining room. Behind the fireplace is the family room and the kitchen.

IMG_1400

Looking in the front door looking left is the Parlour or the library. This room has the amazing bay windows and currently is the home of the refrigerator and the washing machine.

IMG_1402

Here you are looking into the kitchen. The door to the back is the door that leads to Mom and Dad’s place. The opening to the right goes to the mudroom and the laundry and also leads out to the deck. The opening to the left goes to the pantry and to the downstairs powder room.

The ceiling that drops is actually a wall in “naked girls room.” The stairs to her room is to the left immediately beside the entry to Mom and Dad’s

IMG_1398

This room is Mom and Dad’s kitchen. The sliders lead out to their enormous deck.

IMG_1395

This is Mom and Dad’s family room. The door is their from entry and leads out to their deck.

IMG_1393

The drywall is supposed to be finished this week. Next up is door and window trim, paint and floors.

The kitchens will be installed the last week of April as well as the tile guy starts.

I’m working on some before and afters. Should be fun

Love,

the girl who had a weekend off. It was glorious!

Check.it.out.

The old house is starting to really shape up.

We rented a lift for 3 weeks, oh my aching check book, to be able to reach the high parts. There are many high partssssssssss.

The old siding had been covered and preserved for 50+ years by lovely (yeah I don’t mean it) aluminum siding. The siding was removed. The nails and stapled had to be each one painstakingly removed. The holes had to be filled with wood putty and sanded, the cracks all had to be caulked and then paint. Not just one coat of paint but 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of beautiful finish coat.

She’s not completely painted yet but WOWZA is she looking pretty. And thank you JESUS the lift leaves today.

Love,

the girl who should think twice about wearing a dress during renovations. I swear the paint WILL NOT come off.

It’s not always fun

This has been a hard week in regards to the house renovation.

However this week a family at our church lost their son to suicide. This week there has been sickness and pain. It’s has been an emotional rollercoaster. It’s sure makes our silly house renovation seem small.

This morning our Pastor spoke on sadness and depression. It is a hard subject but you know what? It’s part of life. It is something that the person next to you in the grocery store deals with. It’s your friends and your kids friends. We all have sadness and heartache in our lives. Casting Crowns sings a song that says “just be held.”

Sometimes we have to stop holding and just be held.

It’s more than just a house

I had a wonderful and very thought provoking conversation with a friend this morning. She prompted questions as we sat in the office. “How are you?” “How are the house updates coming?” We chat…..it’s sweet and I love her. Then she asks, “before we get back to work and I don’t mean to keep you, but how is your dad?”

Most topics of conversation recently either involve our house renovation, my kids, the upcoming wedding or my dad’s health.

Dad has battled ugly cancer for many years. It’s like riding a wicked rollercoaster and sometimes you are waiting in line and sometimes you are in the front seat hanging on for dear life, screaming and can’t wait to get off. Currently we are in the front seat. It’s really fast, it’s really scary and we would love to get off. However we pray and trust that whatever we endure is in His time and we wait for His instruction. We rely on His strength to sustain us and are hopeful.

During the conversation with my friend, I talk about how we could not have done the house renovation without Mom and Dad. They are ridiculous workers. So faithful. They do however have a vested interest which I believe motivates their work.

I explain to my friend how our house is more than just a bucket list for Steve and I. It is more than just a project that we can say we accomplished. It’s our future. It’s not only our future but it’s Mom and Dad’s future. It will be the place they can call their forever home. It will be a safe place for them. They will be close enough for comfort without their independence being invaded on. (This doesn’t count the last year we have seriously invaded their current home.) It will be a place that Dad can putter in the garage and help me with my garden. It will be a place that on “bad days” they can stay inside and know that it’s ok. They will never have to wonder where they will lay their heads at night. It will be their home for however God allows them to stay.

Psalms 56:3 says “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

Some days I am afraid but I put my trust in Jesus. He will forever be in me, by me and for me and I am grateful.
