The attic

See this paper? This is how I start. I need paper. I know there are computer programs, apps, professionals, blah blah blah. I need a piece of paper and a pen. So here we go into the attic to create a plan.  IMG_0547.JPG

Currently the attic is only accessible through a small hole in the ceiling. Steve is very agile on the ladder. He swoops his long legs up the ladder and hoists himself through the little hole. Me? Not so much. I am afraid past the third rung of the ladder. I need a hand hold at every step and when the ladder wiggles………choice words might escape. I’m not exactly tall so hoisting up into the hole is not an option. It’s more of a hang on for your life and Steve pulls me up. So I make it up, I sit on the edge. I am pretty proud of myself for making it up there. Of course a picture is necessary and then……back away from the hole because I might throw up.

The attic is by far the coolest part of the house. You can see the slanted roof line and the old wood. Oh and then there is the nasty old insulation that will need to be sucked up with the giant vacuum cleaner. Kind of looks like a bunch of dirty sheep laid up there and shedded everywhere. Kind of smells like it too. image

The brick fireplaces make me happy every time I see them

So the plan is to turn this sweet little space into a theater room. Yep, recliners and couches, popcorn machine and a big screen. My friend Renee came over last week and her daughter said “Call me when the movie room is done.” I think this might be a popular place to hang out. Cant wait.

Love,

the girl who will probably never leave home.

P.S.

this window almost makes me cry. I love it so much

Blanche and Will

Since buying our new/old house, we have met a few people that used to live there. We recently met Blanche and Bea, a mother and daughter duo. Blanche is 92 years young and according to her still married to Will who now lives in heaven. She wears is ring around her neck and is still very much in love.

Will and Blanche lived in our house in the 1940’s as a young married couple. Those who follow my blog will understand when I say they lived in Christmas Tree guy’s apartment upstairs. Later in the 1960’s Will and Blanche bought our house and brought their family to live there. They had 3 daughters and other varied family members that lived in the apartments.

Bea was born and raised in Ocala. She still likes to drive past our house just to see what’s going on. She was so sad to see it in such disrepair in recent years and when she saw work being done on it, she stopped by. Mom and Dad were working that day and Bea came in and introduced herself. She called her Mom, Blanche and said “You will never guess where I am.” A few weeks later Bea brought Blanche by and we were all able to meet.

I love when the house comes to life. They talked about Will and the updates he did on the house. Where he built the stairs so that people didn’t have to watch through their living room to get to their apartment. How he loved the paneling installed in many of the rooms. Oh Will……….They talked about Christmas and where they put the tree. They talked about Will building the garage and how he used to pour cement squares for the oil to drip on. The cement squares are still there and Bea is going to take them the next time she comes by. What a privilege it is to be able to give her a little piece of her Daddy.

I hope Bea and Blanche will let me take their picture next time they come over.

love,

the girl with new family members

Charlie Brown

We are a multi generational household. We like different things most of the time. Dad likes to watch car auction shows, pickers, Alaskan something or other, moonshiners, NASCAR and college football. Mom likes Dancing with the Stars, NASCAR and whatever Dad is watching. Steve likes football, NASCAR and NCIS (any city is fine). I like HGTV, DIY Network, Survivor and some other stuff no one else cares about.

However, the other night Charlie Brown Christmas came on. Dad said “what is this?” Well it’s the 50 anniversary of Charlie Brown Christmas. He said “I have never seen this.” Huh???? I’m 51 years old and you have never watched Charlie Brown Christmas?

Well, he has seen it now.

The Leafiest of Times

Sometimes I still think back to our old house. It was a great house. We had recently put in a pool and Steve built a fabulous pergola and we hung lanterns, bought chairs and landscaped. It was a dream…….Swimming PoolThe dream shifted.

Two times during the year leaves would fall. Fall from the trees, fall from the roof, fall from the heavens for goodness sake. Since we, meaning me begged to not have a screen around the pool, the leaves had to be scooped out a minimum of two times a day during the leafiest of times.

Steve and I were driving the other day and he mentioned leaves falling. He laughed under his breath. I said, “What are you laughing at?” He said “Oh I was just thinking about the new owners scooping all those leaves.”

For those of you who think Steve is next to perfect, the evil is there. Just a little.

Love,

the non-leaf scooping girl

A celebration of a life you didn’t know

IMG_0523I attended a funeral today. I read her obituary, I met her significant other Frank. I cooked  bought food for the family. All of that is all well and good but why do we attend funerals for people we don’t know?

The reason is because we love the family that is left behind. Pat knew Jesus. She left this earth on November 23rd and immediately met Jesus. The best day ever………….it’s always hardest on the ones left behind.

Funerals make me uncomfortable. I would rather do just about anything else. Me, the girl who can talk to anyone, but at funerals what do you say? I usually just hug weirdly and try to figure out what to say to the other family members that I do not know. Am I the only one? Come on!!!

However I love the family that is attached to Patricia Ann Stender.  As I sat at the funeral this morning I looked around. I do not know everyone that attended this morning but I did know that most of the people there were not blood relatives. They were however our Church of Hope family. People that love like family. People that show up when life is hard. People that you know without a shadow of a doubt you can count on no matter what.

Ray Stender might not have any biological brothers and sisters but he has us. He has many friends like family that will hold him up when he just can’t seem to do it alone. Alone is not in the vocabulary of our small group. Ray knows that if he needs anything that there are 20 people on speed dial that would be there in a moments notice and what’s so great is that we all know that Ray would do the same for us.

Funerals aren’t for us. They are for the loved ones who are hurting. Sometimes we have to push aside the uncomfortable weirdness and love on the people that are important to us. The pastor this morning said that Pat has an “Extreme Makeover.” She is no longer in pain. She has turned in her wheelchair for her dancing shoes.

Love,

the girl who will treat Ray to the Cheesecake Factory when life isn’t so hard.

the important things

We moved from our past house in April 2015 expecting to be in our new house in 6-8 weeks. Ha!!! I’m not sure what dream world we were living in. Anyways……when we were packing to move I packed away all of my winter clothes.

Where are your winter clothes you ask???? Well they are in the very front section of the 10 x 25 storage unit. Behind mattresses and dressers, Christmas decorations and furniture re-do wanna bees.

Last week, we went to the storage unit after much nagging to see if there was any possible way of retrieving my clothes and boots (cause you know boots are a necessity for winter in Florida). Here is what we sawIMG_0499

oh no!! Shut the door.

Days went by

I really want my winter clothes and I could go and buy some replacements but WHY WOULD I DO THAT when I have great clothes in boxes and of course my boots.

Me: hey I really don’t want to spend money on things I already have.

Steve: So, you want to go to the storage unit and empty it out until we find your boxes?

Me: Yes please?

Steve: Ok well let’s do it before Kyle moves.

Me: yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

It is scheduled. Friday morning before we can make any excuse not to go, we go to the storage unit. Open the door and plow in or climb in, whatever sounds better.

IMG_0497

There was absolutely no way of moving things out of the way, so moving them out was the answer.

I know it’s just stuff, but have I ever missed my stuff. I love that chair!!!

IMG_0500

I’m not saying much at this point. Quietly taking pictures for the blog. Now remember, we are living at my Mom and Dad’s and 80% of our belongings are in this storage unit.

LOOK!!!!!!!

the writing is on the walls

Our house has a bad reputation. It has been beaten and abused. It has had drugs sold off of its front porch and who knows where else. It’s the black sheep of the neighborhood.

No more.

Now it is loved. It has friends. It has bible studies on its front porch even before it’s lived in. It is transformed. Ironically the name of our last church wide study. Transformed. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12v2

I asked our small group to meet on our porch for the last week of our study. We are friends, we laugh together, cry a lot together, support each other and genuinely love one another.

We finished up the study, has some food (of course) and then……….. this is what happened.

These people, our friends, chose scriptures from God’s word and lovingly wrote them on the walls of our home. They wrote in Mom and Dad’s “little house” and they wrote in our “big house. They wrote in the dining room, in the bedroom and on the doorways.  They wrote in the kitchen and upstairs. I can’t think of anything better than for our home to covered with the word of God. The insulation and the drywall will eventually cover up all the words but like God’s love for us, even though we can’t physically see it, we know it’s always there.

One day when we are no longer around and another family loves our home and they are renovating and maybe need to replace some drywall they will find the words of our Father written in love by our friends.

love,

Daddy’s girl

The Secret Room

There is a room in our new/old house that I haven’t spoken of.

It’s the attic. Yep, a third floor

The house had me with the attic. It’s full of rafters, old wood, little alcoves, 2 little windows. super coolness.

It currently does not have any plywood on the floors to walk on so you have to maneuver on the floor joys without falling through the ceiling below.

Today, that gets fixed. No more worrying about falling through the floor. We are putting down plywood.

Steve – Let’s go get plywood for the attic floor today.

Me – Ok sounds good.

What exactly does that mean? Well let me tell you.

Plywood comes in 8 foot sheets. To get the plywood into the attic the sheets must be ripped in half so that they are only 4 foot wide. Why do you say????????

Well………this is the reason. see that hole in the ceiling. Thats currently the only entrance into the attic. oh boy.

IMG_0387

I am resilient. I’m tough. I can do this.

Step 1 =  go to Lowes. Load 10 sheets of plywood onto a big huge cart thing that holds lumber

Step 2 = have the Lowe’s guy cut the full sheets in half. Pay for the plywood. I always hate that part. Load the plywood in the truck, nope. Find a guy while Steve gets the truck and watch him load the plywood.

Step 3 =  here’s where I come in minus paying the bill at Lowes. Steve parks in the front so that the plywood can be unloaded. Now remember, the 10 sheets of plywood have now been cut into 20 sheets.

Here are the stairs. oh boy.

IMG_0386

Steve shimmies up into the attic. No really he uses a ladder. HA!

I then gather 1/2 sheet of plywood and lift it over my head and maneuver it through the hole in the ceiling.

I want you to come back for more, so pictures of the attic coming soon 🙂

love,

the back of my arm is larger than the front.

The Dignity Center

We have friends.

Yes we have friends!! They run a ministry called Wear Gloves. Read more about it here http://weargloves.org. Their mission is to partner with people to help people. Empowering distressed people to serve in their communities and right where God places them. Coming along side folks that want to help and making their service more effective and dignified. They have recently opened the “Dignity Center” that allows distressed folks to work for items that they need i.e.: gifts cards to Publix, a bicycle for their child, etc.

Steve and I recently had a need for new plumbing to be ran from the street to our new/old house. This required a ditch to be dug 18″ deep and approximately 60 feet long. Steve called the Kebrdles at Wear Gloves/The Dignity Center and asked if anyone would be available to work for the day. Ken said yes!!! The details were made.

The day arrived for the 2 men from the Dignity Center to arrive. They arrived on time, they were excellent workers and when I asked if they wanted to finish out the morning with another job, they were very eager to complete my request.

Here are a few pictures of our new friends. They were kind, respectful, they cleaned up after themselves, made friends immediately with Dad and we will be asking them back soon. Call Ken, you won’t be disappointed.

If you would like additional information on Wear Gloves or the Dignity Center reply back and I can give you contact information.

Love,

the girl grateful she didn’t have to dig ditches.
