Flexibility is necessary

If owning a 113 year old is not enough, trying to reimagine it’s new life is really hard.

Yes, we had an architect

Yes we have a permit

Yes we have a plan, Yes we have wishes and dreams. Sometimes Plan A doesn’t work.

The little house apartment bathroom was completely framed up and ready for the plumber. There was not enough space for the toilet. Who knew 30″ was necessary? So the shower walls had to be taken down and moved back into the laundry room which made the laundry room have to be completely reconfigured. Ok, not the end of the world but we don’t have the magic construction framer to come in and magically fix the walls. Nope. It has to be tore out and fixed  so that the plumber can do his thing the next day. It’s dark outside so lights have to be set up. Does he complain? We know what has to be done. We also know that this is for “right now” and “not for forever.”

Here is the new “Little house” bathroom. It’s not much to look at but it’s going to be much better for the ‘rents.

Another BIG change was upstairs.

We will be adding a second set of stairs from the second floor to the attic. The stairs have been a challenge since day 1. Head room, stair treads, landings, yadda yadda yadda. The stairs started in the front room, moved to the back room with a hidden door and nowwwwwwww hopefully their final destination has been determined. However this change has eliminated a bathroom which is not a bad thing. I think we might be able to survive with 4 1/2 bathrooms. Snark snark.

Being flexible is our middle names.

A girl with a saw

Me. I used the chop saw. It was fun. I think Steve must have been desperate for an assistant.

I have a shameful thing to admit. I can’t read a ruler. I am good with 1/4, 1/2. 3/4 and the whole number. But all those other little lines???? Cant do it. Steve has tried to teach me. He quizzes me. I can’t do it. As me sometime how I measure, it might make you laugh.

saw

For drywall to be correct, we needed to put in little pieces of wood in each little space. That became my job. I went to the leftover wood pile, grabbed the closest size, measure the space, measure the wood, cut, drill into place, repeat. I wouldn’t begin to know how many I cut but it seemed like 1000’s.

The view will improve

We spoke last week about the restoration of the original windows. The restoration is in process as we speak. They are being removed, stripped, scraped, sanded, primed, wood filled and sanded again. We have 6 windows currently at the glass shop getting new window panes. They will then be reglazed, painted and installed. Sounds easy? Not even close.

The other windows, mainly in the little house, our master bathroom, the laundry room and naked girls room needed to be replaced. They were mismatched and just plain ugly. Here are a few samples.

Today was a good day. It was the day that our new windows were delivered. They are shiny and beautiful. They will match our old windows. They will keep my parents cool on sweltering Florida summer days and they will keep them warm during the not-so-cold winter nights. They will make our home beautiful and I am grateful.

Here’s a sneak peek.

the girl who will enjoy the new view.

The glamorous life I lead

I thought you might like to know how I spent my day today. You might think a spa day or a day shopping with a friend. No, not quite.

I started my day in long sleeves and a hoodie. After hauling large boards to the dumpster the hoodie had to go. Then this happened…..the bottom half of my sleeves had to go. I got hot and there was a razor knife near by. CUT THEM OFF!!! Steve said my muscles were busting out, yeah right.

The rest of the morning I spent here, in the attic.

image

Not dreaming of the new design or how we will enjoy a spectacular movie room. See all that fluffy brown stuff? It’s old antique insulation and that’s not a good thing. It’s stinky and dirty and it has to go. Every last puff ball.

On goes gloves and a mask

I’m not fond of heights so I shimmy up the ladder and maneuver myself around on the random pieces of plywood between my booty and falling through the ceiling of the second floor.

The fluffy brown stuff is pushed into a large garbage bag and tossed down the attic access. It then gets thrown out the window of the second floor and taken to the dumpster.

Here is some of my haul for today.

We are not alone anymore

We have worked and worked and worked some more for this day……The subs have started!!!!

Plumbers are first. It might not seem much to most people but to see pipes popping up through the floor and numerous men wandering around the house with tool belts, I do the happy dance.

This is Mom and Dad’s bathroom.

these are the pipes over mom and dad’s shower

IMG_0718IMG_0719

Our house is on piers so the plumbers must work under the house installing the needed pipes for the first floor. Our light definitely comes in handy for that dark place under the house.

It’s also pretty sweet and very handy that we still have a giant hole in the floor.

The plumbers are here……..ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

The AC dudes are coming this week too. I know you can hardly wait to see the pictures.

Love,

Sub Contractors make me happy.

Looking pretty bad

There are 37 windows. 14 will be replaced with new/old looking windows and will be delivered next week. That leaves 23 old, thickly painted over and over again, broken 113 year old windows. There were many conversations regarding the 23 windows, however in the end, the decision was made to take them out one by one and strip the paint off, sand, repair, prime, paint, replace the glass, re-glaze and LOVE the old windows.

Here are the few pictures of the “before”. Notice the aluminum siding has been removed on about 1/3 of the house. The siding is amazing but it needs a lot of love.

IMG_0681

The bottom left window is missing the bottom half and has been sportin the plywood base since day 1.

IMG_0680

Here is the other side of the house.

IMG_0696

This happened today. Two at a time. We just wave as people walk by.

IMG_0694

This would be the current work space (sweat shop) for the window restorations. 2 down………..21 to go.

The Front Doors. notice the plural

Currently the front porch has 3 doorways. 2 doors and one previous door that is now beautiful plywood. OOOOOOOOHHHHHHH AAAAAAAAHHHH

This doorway was the previous door to the grossest ever apartment #4. I mean the grossest. The windows are broken, there was a pot growing closet, the bathroom I cannot even begin to describe, the refrigerator was full of maggots. Should I go on?

We are trying to salvage any of the 4 panel doors for the renovation but this one…..probably not. They didn’t replace locks on the door, they just added another one each time. Brilliant.

IMG_0673

The double opening here is for apartment 1 on the right and the left goes up the stairs to previous apartments 3 & 4 hence the lovely numbers still located on the door frame.

How about that mailbox leaning? It was built by Will. Go back and read Blanche and Will. I have promised Blanche she can have it when she returns.

IMG_0674

We ordered our new door today. YEAH BABY!!!! I’m in looooooovvvveeee. Although the door will not be black. Stay turned for the reveal.

Front door

By the way, Santa aka Richard (yeah right) was our sales guy at Home Depot. I asked him if it was his busy season and he said yes of course.

Love,

the girl with too many front doors.

I’m going to be a Mom again

Oh come on really???? You actually let your brain go there???

Our girl got engaged. Justin popped the question and it was something you see in the movies.

Justin was playing in a Christmas/Worship Band downtown last Sunday night. It was an outside venue on a beautiful evening. Justin had called and let us know that it was going to be that night. I gathered family and made sure all were going to be there without ruining the surprise. Courtney did not have a clue.

Look at her face when the worship leader said there was surprise and Justin jumps off the stage and starts running to her.

IMG_0646

I love watching her face. I have never seen her so happy.

justin and courtney

She said yes!

IMG_0641

I love that we are adding another son to the family.Yes I will be a mom again.

I think I might be sick

Not sick in the way you think. I have a chair sickness. I like chairs.

When we moved, my chair disease was the talk of the movers. I believe at last count there were 40ish. That did not include the chairs that we used in the house. These are chairs found by the side of the road, chairs bought at garage sales, chairs that friends give me, chairs, chairs CHAIRS!!!! tall chairs, skinny chairs, chairs that has high backs. Fat chairs, ugly chairs, even chairs without a back. It’s chairs….. lots of chairs. It’s chairs I love and that’s that. ( you have to sing the last part like the Amour hotdog song! Google it)

When we emptied the storage unit a few weeks looking for my winter clothes…..chairs were again the topic of conversation as they were moved, moved and moved again. At least you know who to see if you need a chair.

Love,

the girl who loves chairs
