Look what’s happening

It’s a big deal to be purchasing wood and nails. You know what that means????? She’s going back together. Today is exactly 5 weeks and 1 day since we started tearing her apart. We have beaten, beaten and BEATEN down wall after wall after wall after wall. OK you get it. The walls are plaster and were not salvageable so its not just 1 layer of drywall and some nails…..it’s 3 layers of plaster which only comes down with relentless hammering and then a layer of lath (remember the lath whisperer?) which comes down with a crowbar and a hammer. It’s hard work people, just sayin. Dad has quite the system for removing lath and can take down a wall like nobody’s business. Mom and I feel like the clean up crew most of the time. They tear it up, we clean it up.

This picture was the first trip, we have since been three times for 2 x 4’s. Insert happy dance here. Watching the floors being repaired and new walls going up is so exciting.

Everyone is hanging in there. I will be posting pictures of the family this weekend so you know that everyone is still alive and kicking.

Sanity Lunch

Every Wednesday I attend a sanity lunch. Sometimes it’s just two friends getting together to enjoy each other’s company. Sometimes it’s work related. Sometimes we grumble and groan and leave feeling 10 pounds lighter just because there is a friend that you know you can vomit all over and she will love you anyways. Sometimes it’s more than one friend and you laugh so hard that others stare. That was today.

If you don’t know me, I’m in purple. All I see in this picture are wrinkles and the girls are a little in your face. Sorry in advance. I just cannot believe I am middle aged with wrinkles. whatever.

See the stunning silver fox on my right your left? She thinks she needs to lose 20 pounds and refused to eat her cookie today. whatever. She is my bestie. She is the friend that everyone needs to have. She will put me in my place when I need to be put in a place, she will hug me when I need hugged and she is the friend I count on. She is faithful and a true friend

The other cutie came to lunch with us today. We laughed and laughed and laughed some more.

If you don’t have a friend like my friends. Find one. Don’t wait. Get busy. I promise you won’t be sorry.

Loved.

A Day off from Reno

We decided from the beginning that we would take 1 weekend day off a month. It sounds easy but not for us. We are doers. Get er-doners, no players. Great qualities to exhibit but exhausting. Yesterday was our day off. I thought it might not happen. Here is what I heard “I don’t feel like I got enough accomplished last week.”

“Saturdays are the days I get the most done.”

“Maybe we should just go for a little while”

No, Nope, Naddah, can’t do it, need to be clean for 1 whole day!!!!!!

We love the movies. Maybe it’s I love the movies. You can’t talk. You are transported away. Your phone has to be put away. I LOVE POPCORN!! Whatever it is, the movies are what we usually are drawn to on a day off.

Have you see Woodlawn? Oh. my. gosh.

yes I follow Jesus. Yes I love inspirational films that talk about Jesus. But this one was more than I ever expected. I ugly cried 4 times. Just sayin. go here!! Watch the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xb8fhck0ks’

A few of my favorite quotes from the movie.

“I am asking you to stand up, to make a decision, to change, to forgive and to be forgiven.”

“There’s something special about you. I can see it. You have a gift. And you have to decide what you have to do with it.”

The prayer scene at the football stadium just about sent me over the edge. THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY

Hand with finger held up

Woman hand. Gesture number one. Isolated object.

go see it, you won’t be sorry

There’s no crying in……….

Who remembers this?

there's no crying in baseball

This is what was spoken to me yesterday as the walls around the fireplace were removed. Except it was “There’s no crying in house renovations!”

Since day 1, I have anticipated the removal of the walls around the fireplace. Who has seen the Fixer Upper episode where Chip exposes an original brick fireplace from behind the wall? ok that’s me.

This is the first picture. Who knew there was brick behind the wall?

this is the other side of the wall.

The brick has been discovered. Happy dance!!!

Day after day, chipping away. It was worth the work. We got it all torn down except for the closet on the left. Old wood is like titanium. Sledgehammers even shudder.

IMG_0092

Here is where the tears came. When the picture in your brain comes true. I mean, come on, it’s tear worthy.

Look at the stud!!!

no really, the studs!!!! We are exactly 4 weeks and 3 days into renovations. We have demo’d almost all of the downstairs. Which includes 2 kitchens, 3 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, a dining room and 2 fireplaces. Wait till you see the fireplace!!

The plumbing contractor has been chosen, the kitchen cabinets for the apartment have been ordered, the windows have been chosen and we are in the process of ordering,  the electrician has been called, we have gotten a quote for the HVAC. Things are moving along.

Look at the studs!!!!

IMG_0158

this will be the new laundry room in the big house. Yes you do see more lath on the floor. I have a sickness.

IMG_0159

this is the apartment bathroom. Lots of rotten wood was found in the floor. Yucky cannot begin to describe.

A little history and a nap

There was a room where all the walls were black. It was a closet. The first time we looked at the house, this room was pad locked. You would think I would have a clue. Nope, not a clue. The second time we looked, the lock was gone and we were able to peek in. I’m not sure I wanted to but I did anyways. I was enlightened by my Millennial aged children. This was a pot growing room. Black walls and a special light. Yep, makes sense. The walls have been torn down. No more pot. Thank you

IMG_0132

Are you ever so tired, you just need to sleep wherever you are? I needed a nap. There was no way I would be able to function without one. I drive a little 2 seater pick up truck with not a lot of room to spare. No biggie.

IMG_0137

Step 1: figure out how to maneuver yourself into a semi laying down position

Step 2: Set your phone alarm for 30 minutes.

Step 3: Pray that no one weird comes up and finds you asleep in your driveway

Step 4: Feel better and GET BUSY!!!!

love,

the grossest room yet.

There is a bedroom in apartment 1 that is the worst. The walls are covered with siding, there was a large poop smear on the floor, it has a super scary door that leads to the outside and overall it’s nasty. This room we are hoping to be our new and improved master bathroom.

Super Trooper parents have been removing the drywall and paneling from the walls this week which left the ceiling. The night crew arrives and the ceiling is our plan for the night. You know when you just have a feeling that something is going to be so much worse than you expected. Yep. You guessed it, the ceiling. oh my.lucky you, you get a close up 🙂 The paneling itself is just so pretty, not. You must use a crow bar and a hammer to loosen the boards.

The insulation falls on your head. Thankfully this was a big huge piece that I so lucky get to drag out to the dumpster while Steve is yelling, cold showers tonight. Insulation makes you itch. Great, so excited

IMG_0128

then when we are not so lucky, we get this nasty blown in, stinky, wretched insulation that falls out of the sky. Oh my word. Don’t breathe.

old, dirty insulation is not my friend.

who gives a lath

plaster walls are a whole new experience for me. You would think they would be super strong but they ARE NOT. They crumble and our plaster walls are super duper gross. They have not been painted in a very long time and they have absorbed all kinds of interesting smells. Most of them are leaving by way of the dumpster. When plaster is removed, via hammer and my very strong muscles, there are little wood strips behind called lath. There are hundreds no thousands of little strips of wood. My mind starts building things with all those little strips of wood. I hear Steve in my brain…… oh no you don’t!!!! Just a few I say. I already have a marketing plan for those babies.

So I found  a closet under the stairs that can hold a few hundred.

The Bea machine does her magic and poof they are de-nailed and bundled for the future.

Accidents do happen

So far we have been extremely fortunate in the area of injuries. We do have two “not so young” people working hard every day at the house. We also have some younger more inexperienced workers that are very willing but have not had much time behind a hammer.

Kyle stepped on a nail the first week and had to get a tetanus shot. Since then, we encourage up to date tetanus before entering the premises.

Last week, we uncovered a vent in the floor.

The vent was removed from the floor.IMG_0108

The hole you see……..was where my foot went through the floor. My large posterior kept me from falling all the way through the floor. I am unable to show you my injury. I would be arrested for porn. Sorry, no way.

We are still grateful for the few injuries.

Keeping our fingers and toes crossed.

November 15, 1970

What was going on in your life on November 15th, 1970? I was 5 years old. Made it through almost half of Kindergarten looking forward to my upcoming 6th birthday.  It was also my Momma Bea’s  birthday. She was a real looker back then. Really? It was definitely Mom’s birthday but the rest. I have no idea. But when I whacking down yet another wall I did find some really old newspaper from November 15, 1970 they were using as insulation. They definitely didn’t use anything else for insulation.

I googled Crash Crisis on that date but didn’t come up with anything. I bet my friend Glenn will know.

IMG_0028

Check out the prices!!!! Bacon 49 cents. Are you kidding me?!

IMG_0029 IMG_0030

I tried to save the paper. I thought it would super cool to frame it and hang it somewhere but it just fell apart with every move. I am patiently waiting on the big  bag of money I know someone must have stashed in the walls. For now, history will have to do. It’ll do pig.
